Earlier this month, a Wisconsin jury recommended criminal charges for seven Milwaukee County Jail staffers in connection to the dehydration death of a mentally ill inmate.
In the radio interview, Sheriff Clarke said his experience on the local level will allow him to relay the concerns of law enforcement to the federal government.
The official DHS twitter account also echoed this statement on Wednesday afternoon, more than an hour after Clarke's announcement. "And one that's really near and dear to me, liaison with the state, local and tribal law enforcement", he said.
"I'm both honored and humbled to be appointed to this position by Secretary Kelly, working for the Trump administration", he said during the radio show.
Clarke has become a conservative darling through his provocative social media presence and was a strong supporter of Donald Trump during the presidential campaign. "No such announcement with regard to the Office of Public Engagement has been made", a spokeswoman for the agency told The Daily Caller.
Clarke previously said that as many 1 million people who, according to him are terrorist sympathizers, should be shipped to Guantanamo Bay and added that it's time to suspend habeas corpus.
"I have to retire from law enforcement", Clarke said.
While Clarke seems to think that USA social problems can simply be wiped away through a tough "lock them up and throw away the key" approach, his own record heading the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department shows that the jails he's run have fallen far short of minimal human rights standards.
"For the country I love, the last thing America needs is another loud voice angrily and unproductively telling you who to blame and who not to trust", Abele said. He was one of few African-American speakers to endorse Donald Trump at the 2016 Republican National Convention.
"In President Trump, we have chosen a leader", Clarke told the audience at CPAC.
Tom Evenson, spokesman for Walker, said his office had not yet received a formal resignation letter from Clarke.
Whoever Walker picks will serve the remainder of Clarke's term, which runs through the end of 2018.
In explaining the appointment process, Walker's office did not offer congratulations or any reaction to Clarke's news.
