Shadow Welsh secretary, Christina Rees, thanked Welsh Labour candidates and stressed that this would be hard for Labour: "It always inspires me that even when times seem tough for Labour, they never fail to rise to the challenge with a passion and energy that no other party can match".
By lunchtime in Britain, UKIP had lost all the seats that it held, and failed to make any gains.
The Conservative party have taken control of Warwickshire County Council, winning 36 of the 57 available seats.
On his projection, the Conservatives will win 349 seats, with Labour on 215, the SNP on 54 and the Liberal Democrats stuck on their current score of just nine.
The Scottish National Party (SNP), which campaigned for remaining in the European Union and is committed to independence from the United Kingdom, took a majority of votes north of the English border to remain the biggest party in the council elections with a total of 431 seats.
Britain's ruling Conservative Party made considerable gains in local elections on Friday as the populist UK Independence Party (UKIP) suffered a massive blow, according to incomplete results from across England, Scotland and Wales.
By 9pm on Friday, with all of the results in, the Tories had gained 563 seats while Labour had lost 382.
And they only lost out on Northumberland County Council because of drawing straws.
The Conservatives will win a healthy - but not an overwhelming - majority in the general election, an analysis of the results found.
"And the reality is that only a General Election vote for the Conservatives in 34 days' time will strengthen my hand to get the best deal for Britain from Brexit".

Labour played down its losses.

While the complete tally is pending, the broad trends are clear, with the UKIP confirmed as having suffered the maximum casualties in the contest.
