The Las Vegas gunman's girlfriend, back in the United States after a weeklong trip overseas, will be at the centre of the investigation into the shooting deaths of 59 people as authorities try to determine why Stephen Paddock, a man with no known record of violence or crime, would open fire on a concert crowd from a high-rise hotel.
Speaking to Australia's Channel 7 News, Marilou Danley's sister, who did not want to be identified, claims Stephen Paddock sent her away to the Philippines, insisting Marilou had no knowledge of the planned carnage.
Paddock had recently wired $100,000 to the Philippines, a USA law enforcement source confirmed to CNN.
Why did Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old retired accountant, fire from his 32nd-floor hotel window into a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers in the heart of Las Vegas? An additional 19 guns were found in Paddock's home in Mesquite, Nevada.
"The author of the attack of Las Vegas is a soldier of the islamic State", said Qama, the propaganda organ of the ARS in a message in Arabic, without more of precision.
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Special Agent in Charge Jill Schneider said Paddock had a combination of rifles, shotguns and pistols in the three locations.
The statement says she anxious that Paddock wanted to break up with her.
It was through his gambling that Paddock reportedly met Danley, when she was working as a hostess at a casino in Reno, Nevada, several years ago.
Officials say Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock had been stockpiling guns since 1982 and bought 33 firearms in the past year.
The weekend before the shooting, Paddock rented a room in another Las Vegas hotel, the Ogden.
"Joining us today are numerous heroes who were here during that awful moment, that disgusting night", he said.
"It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone", Danley said in the statement. Fifty-eight people were killed and more than 500 were wounded in the attack.
Trump said on October 3 that the police response to the situation was "in many ways, a miracle", according to The Washington Post.
Her lawyer, Matt Lombard, said Danley was "fully cooperating" with the investigation.
Richard Vasquez, a former chief of firearms technology for the ATF, said "without a doubt it was automatic fire", but it's hard to determine any more specifics about the weapons used because the videos are shot from so far away and there are lots of gunshot echoes.
President Donald Trump has landed in Las Vegas, where he will meet with victims and first responders of the mass shooting Sunday night.
His abrasive tweets and the comments he made Tuesday while visiting Puerto Rico, she said, made her think he may fail to show genuine compassion for Las Vegas.
Before the Las Vegas attack, a man named Stephen Paddock booked rooms in a Chicago hotel that overlooked the site of the August Lollapalooza music festival, a spokeswoman for Chicago's Blackstone Hotel said in an e-mail. "I thought he did an excellent job and the support that he got throughout to heal our nation and bring us back in a time of need". "He loved her. He doted on her", Eric Paddock, Paddock's brother, told The Washington Post.
