"Our collaboration with Intel expands the installed base for AMD Radeon GPUs and brings to market a differentiated solution for high-performance graphics" Scott Herkelman says, vice president and general manager of Radeon Technologies Group.
AMD explains that it has "designed a semi-custom graphics processor unit (GPU) that will be integrated into a new Intel multi-chip processor package". I personally have been covering the IT market with special focus on ATI, Nvidia, later AMD and Intel for 18 years and we have veterans who have been following up this market for more than four decades, and staff at Fudzilla and previously The Inquirer exclusively broke hundreds of stories.
But the real story here, of course, is Intel's collaboration with AMD, one of its biggest CPU competitors. By comparison, most notebooks PCs that now feature Core H-Series processors average about 26mm in height.
Monday's partnership might sound odd, given that AMD and Intel have been competitors for years in the PC chip industry. Chris Walker, vice president of the Client Computing Group and general manager of the Mobile Client Platform at Intel, said that the new joint project between Intel and AMD is "a great example of how we can compete and work together, ultimately delivering innovation that is good for consumers".
The latest chip, possibly named Kaby Lake G, from the purple team (claiming that name early) is intended for mobile application, specifically within lightweight and thin laptops. EMIB eliminates height impact as well as manufacturing and design complexities, enabling faster, more powerful and more efficient products in smaller sizes.
The power sharing framework is a connection among the processor, graphics chip, and graphics memory, with software drivers and interfaces in the semi-custom discrete GPU that coordinates information among all three elements. It also reportedly uses about half the memory power. Intel was up 1 percent, while Nvidia was down 0.5 percent. Nvidia holds almost 80% of the market for stand-alone graphics chips by revenue, in direct competition with AMD, and competes with Intel on artificial intelligence chips for large corporations, the Wall Street Journal noted.
The unnamed product will be based on Intel's 8 generation Core family. It will also allow for managing temperatures between the chips, which is going to be very important, especially as the laptops this is targeting get thinner.
