Ole Miss has a handful of attractive seniors on its roster. The program self-imposed scholarship restrictions and a one-year bowl ban in 2017 as a result of that aspect of the investigation.
They will have an addition one year bowl ban, in addition to the self-imposed one they are now serving, meaning no bowl games until 2019.
Ole Miss "lacked institutional control and fostered an unconstrained culture of booster involvement in football recruiting", according to the NCAA's Committee on Infractions ruling.
On Friday, the NCAA gave Ole Miss an additional postseason ban for 2018, stripped the school of two additional scholarships, put it on probation until November 30, 2020 and forced the vacation of wins. The NCAA's Committee on Infractions finally ruled on the Rebels' years-long case and unveiled its punishment on Friday. The NCAA says six football staff members and 12 boosters contributed to the current violations. "I want to thank everyone who stood by me, including my family, my friends, and the University of MS".
Former head coach Hugh Freeze received a show-cause tag also. The Rebels got a new bowl ban, financial penalties, a loss of scholarships and individuals have also been penalized. An assistant coach and operations coordinator also acted unethically when they arranged the fraudulent ACT scores and arranged for a booster to provide housing and transportation to five prospects while they completed the necessary academic work to become eligible for competition. Ole Miss must also vacate wins that ineligible athletes participated in, which could take some time to sort out. Yet, I am encouraged that the CIO found the failure to monitor was a mitigated violation based on, among other things, my personal record of compliance with NCAA rules.
Both administrators declined to offer details about the change, but Bjork added, "We strongly disagree with the tactics used by the enforcement staff to keep us isolated in the final months of the investigation".
Ole Miss reached the.500 mark after beating Mississippi State 31-28 on Thanksgiving.
Freeze resigned over off-field issues - including allegations that he repeatedly made phone calls to escort services - in July.
Bjork said the university would begin the appeals process for the postseason ban as quickly as possible.
