'Tis the season to celebrate the year's top performers on Apple's iOS App Store and iTunes after already seeing Google hand out its awards for best 2017 Android apps and games, as well as the most popular Play Music, Books, Movies and TV titles.
The Witness is a puzzle game available at $9.99 for both the iPad and iPhone.
Similarly to previous annual charts, Apple has revealed top charts for the most popular apps and games of the year too. Affinity Photo was chosen as the best iPad app, Aurora HDR 2018 is the best Mac app and ChefsFeed is the #1 Apple TV app.
Apple said its editors and curators identified four breakout trends in app culture in 2017: the introduction of augmented reality, the rise of real-time competitive gaming, apps that transform storytelling and reading and those that focus on mental health and mindfulness. The most popular AR apps downloaded on the App Store include Zombie Gunship Revenant AR, Arise, Filmr, Follow Me Dragon, Magicplan, My Very Hungry Caterpillar AR and Thomas & Friends Minis.
To begin with, on Apple Music, Drake topped album of the year with More Life, while Ed Sheeran's Shape of You got top song honors.
This year, Apple has also introduced a new year-end section for the "trends of the year". Taylor Swift's album "reputation" has already shot up to #3 on the 2017 U.S. top album charts, despite having only been available for a short period of time.
